Hacking a Hexbug spider (http://www.hexbug.com/spider/hexbug-spider-single.html) using the EMGRobotics Spider Hack Kit (www.buildsmartrobots.com) to make the walking spider autonomous. The hacked spider is fully programmable in C using the TI Launchpad and TI Code Composer Studio tools. In this demo, the spider uses it's Infra-Red eye to avoid bumping into obstacles catching the curiosity of my cat. This low-cost hack ($44.30) is a fun afternoon project requiring only an additional soldering iron, wire, 2 AAA batteries, and a computer with a USB port. This hack would be perfect for the Boy Scouts robotics merit badge. Go to www.buildsmartrobots.com for more information.

  • Yes, the hacked Hexbug spider can turn left or right, in small increments. The hacked spider can also walk forward or backward.

I just posted a new video showing the updated software and two hacked spiders interacting.

  • Can the Hexbug turn at less than 90 angles? Is this programmable with the TI Launchpad?

  • Very cool.
