Album Review: Blood Mountain by Mastodon

These Atlanta thrash / prog / sludge metal heads released their 3rd album (FIRST major label album) in 2006 on Reprise/Relapse records.

The first mastodon album I ever really listened to was Crack the Skye (2009) and I was really really impressed by it, so I decided to take a step into Mastodon's previous work.

Blood Mountain is a million times thrashier and heavier. I'd say the vocals on this album are THEE craziest and varied I have ever experienced.

Blood Mountain is nowhere near as proggy as Skye, but it still incorporates lots of prog ideals (IE: epic guitar, songs about mythological beings, other dimensions etc).

Blood Mountain is very heavy, very technical metal album. It's amazing how intricate the songs are, how insane some of the vocals are.

I was such an asshole to have written these guys off as some lame mainstream metal band.

While I will say i do enjoy Crack The Skye more, Blood Mountain does have some moments of sheer madness that easily rival anything on Skye. Mountain was just to heavy on riffs and thrash for me. Skye had more of nerdy, proggy feel to it. Yes, I am a total wuss !!!!

But that's not to say Blood Mountain is bad album by any stretch of the imagination. It's pretty wild.

Fans of thinking mans thrash / prog metal should love this album, which they probably do already, seeing as how these guys are one of the biggest metal bands around right now.
