R.C. Sproul on the doctrine of hell, the depravity of man, the holiness of God, and God's glory in judgment.

@ZomBradical No one is made good through confession. The least in heaven are greater than the greatest on earth. This means God must repair and renew all Christians before they can enter the kingdom of God. Thus, there is no reason to think God won't repair and renew the unbelievers as well.

@StormTrek But mechanics don't seek out people...people seek mechanics! Jesus has been right in front of our faces for over 2000 years! There's no excuse for why people shouldn't go to hell. Who knows, maybe there's an era after "eternity", where all unbelievers can be released, having served their time......but probably not, knowing the meaning of eternity :( There's no confusing forever and ever.....see that you know Jesus. The obstacle of sin has been removed!

@ShaneChiswick It's not just sinful by default...we also sin by choice. Our entire existence is devoted to OURSELVES. We're all guilty of wanting to be first in line, laughing at other people falling down (as long as it's not us), and even the urge to see justice to those that've wronged us. Charity, forgiveness, and love (for EVERYONE including "enemies") isn't natural for us. All able-minded folk who choose wrong deserve punishment, no matter how we FEEL about the matter.

I understand hell and why people would deserve it, but I also know God doesn't need it. There's no reason God can't be a mechanic who repairs all of humanity. We know he already needs to repair (sanctify) confessing Christians, there's no reason to think he won't repair unbelievers as well. In fact, I would expect Him to do it just because it's in His nature to repair rather than destroy.

As has been said God IS good and that is the most terrifying proposition in the universe. His goodness, His holiness is so pure, so ontologically opposed to our sinful nature, our original sin, willful sins, rebellion, self-will, self-righteousness, and hatred of all that is holy, that we demand His wrath.
Only by the mercy of God through sovereign grace through the miracle of regeneration, can we have any claim to eternal life through faith in the alien righteousness, of His beloved Son Jesu

God is very loving to torture so many people for eternity, what a wonderful compassionate default punishment for sin...it will be lovely to spend eternity in heaven while your children and family are dog paddling in the lake of fire with lave coming out of every available orophus....but of course they deserved it...they chose to be born in a culture utterly opposed to the God of the bible.

@mitchnicholscpa "That will be good, as most of my family of origin and my present family do not appear to be elect, which brings me great agony."
I feel your pain. Love them, and pray for them.

When we get to glory, nothing else will matter, but beholding His glory and worshipping forever the lamb slain before the foundations of the world. In eternity earthly relationships no longer matter, as the Word (our ONLY authority) says: "in the resurrection, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God.". That will be good, as most of my family of origin and my present family do not appear to be elect, which brings me great agony.
