Fundamentals are more like essentials. Learning grip and body position are crucial to controlling your firearm's recoil. In this video Dave Spaulding puts special emphasis on trigger control for managing your gun, as well as other essentials like grip and body position.
This video series is a collection of self-defense tips with career law enforcement officer Dave Spaulding designed to help individuals learn proper skills and techniques to defend themselves. Spaulding has worked in all facets of law enforcement and was a founding member of his agencys SWAT Team. He was also the commander of a multi-agency narcotics task force that included local, state and federal investigators. Most recently, he received the 2010 Trainer of the Year Award by Law Officer Magazine.

  • Dave, that is an excellent tip on reloading, to tilt the weapon toward you slightly. Just FYI, but at the range I go to, they chew your tail out if people don't keep the weapon pointed down range. But great tip I'll try out in the open field where I'm not nervous as heck.

  • Safety first! Keeping the gun pointed down range at any training facility or range is incredibly important. If you want to practice a tip like this, adjust your body slightly so that when you perform the move the gun itself is still pointing down range. Be careful, and if it doesn't seem like you can practice a move like this safely in a public setting, then just don't do it. Your instincts are right - always look for a way to train safely!
