This performance of the third movement (allegro vivace) of Schubert's Symphony No 9 in C major was recorded by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Adrian Boult early in its existence in December 1934.

This was very much Adrian Boult's signature work. He performed Schubert 9 more than any other symphony during his long conducting career.

This is a track from Beulah 1PD32 "Historic Schubert". Available in all good record stores or direct from Beulah.

Robert Cowen writes in Gramophone for December 2008:

"I was happy to encounter Beulah's expert transfer/remastering of Sir Adrian Boult's first recording of Schubert's Ninth, a brilliantly executed performance (BBCSO), swift and breezy, and, as almost always with Boult, acutely structure-conscious. I was grateful to discover Anatole Fistoulari's 1944 Unfinished with the National Philharmonic, a fresh and dramatic reading, though not quite as well recorded at the Boult."

Bob Briggs at Music Web International writes:
"Its obvious that Boult is using a smaller orchestra than would be used today and because of this the dance like scherzo has a more earthy feel to it than is usual. Its a real light fantastic and full of Austrian peasant dancing. The trio is packed with wonderful harmonie sounds. "

Robert Matthew Walker writes in International Record Review for February 2009: The first thing that strikes the listener is the fine quality of the sound and the silent surfaces for a 75 year old recording. In addition the orchestral balance is excellent, as is the "spread" of the orchestral layout - it sounds as though it could almost come from twenty years later. Boult delivers a truly supurb performance: if this does not convince those who never heard him as to his greatness as a conductor, then nothing will. His control of long paragraphs is faultess and pefectly paced; his lead into the faster first movement coda is magnificently timed and controlled. This is marvellous conducting, and no mistake.

lad glad to learn of Adrian Boult's role championing this great Schubert symphony. I used to drink lemon juice during the Trio - try it! Boult is outstanding on Sibelius too.

  • This is a "Great" tempo. It's marked Allegro Vivace. Too often it's performed neither Allegro nor vivace!

  • great work of art and rythm.
