"On Broadway" was written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil and first recorded by both The Cookies and The Crystals with both versions failing to gain much notice. When producers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller found themselves a song short on a recording session with The Drifters, they asked Mann and Weil if they had anything the guys could use, and sure enough, they gave them "On Broadway". Leiber and Stoller tinkered with the original melody and lyrics some to fit what they wanted for The Drifters, and the end result was a Top 10 hit for the group in the spring of '63. The lead guitar solo on this recording is played by a young Phil Spector.
Love this song. Didn't know that Phil Spector played the guitar solo! Wow!
