WASHINGTON (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Former Fort Wayne Mayor Paul Helmke is confident that the United States Supreme Court will not greatly restrict gun control laws in a case argued Tuesday before the high court.

At issue in the court case is whether the city of Chicagos handgun ban from 1982 should be thrown out or modified, based on a lawsuit filed by a man who says the law violates his second amendment rights.

Helmke, who now heads up the Brady Center to prevent gun violence, does not believe the justices will opt for either extreme in this matter.

Helmke says, "This decision, outside of affecting Chicago, won't really affect regulations that other states and other cities have done. It will make it easier, again, for criminal defendants to argue that they should get off the hook and it'll make it easier for people to sell guns and convince elected officials that they ought to be loosening the few laws that are on the books though."

A ruling in the cases is expected by the end of June.

  • You gotta be kidding me. Does this guy really think he's fooling anyone? The McDonald case is about law abiding homeowners in Chicago being allowed to have a handgun in his/her home for self defense. The remainder of Illinois allows it if you qualify for an FOID card. Chicago's ban goes way beyond common sense regulation and this guy appears to concede it'll be defeated by the court. This case has nothing to do with carrying in public or modifying restrictions on criminals barred from guns

  • I don't think Helmke wants power. He is just ignorant and fails to notice that we have thousands of gun laws on the books.
