Here you can see a Gardner 4T5 semi-diesel or suface ignition engine, also known as "Hot Bulb."

It is started by heating the cylinder heads and then turned over on compressed air, the pre heat time being 4 minuits.

The engine works on the two stroke prinicple and the valve gear on the side shafts is simply for the air start and lubricator sytems.

This engine was built in 1925 and used to generate electricity and the engine produces 75HP at 400RPM.

You can see this marvelous engine at the Anson Engine Museum of which I recomend a visit!

  • Thanks.

This was a nice video. I hope i can go to Anson Engine Museum one day.

I have many films at my page to.

  • Thank you, it's a great museum and well worth visiting. I went for a weekend and there is plenty to see.

  • Why the one different floofloo valve? Did you have to remake one?

  • Not quite sure what you mean by "floo floo" valve but I think you mean crankcase breather valves!?

In which case, the one different valve has simply had it's cover removed to show the breather operating, more interesting to the onlooker.

    Cheers.

  • Ah right, that sounds interesting, I'd love to see a photo of that.

  • @steamwally I've seen what I think is an eight cylinder hot bulb mine power engine a few hundred miles from here. Stands about 8-9 feet tall. I'll have to get a picture of the maker's plate.

  • @steamwally I think it would be more accurate to call them combustion air admission valves? They're really not crankcase breathers in the proper sense. Are they simply a steel disc with a spring or springs behind them?

    Best regards.

  • At one time, Hornsby's made a 8 cylinder, fourstroke, hot bulb semi diesel. Needless to say it was too complicated for it's own good, but impressive power and smoothness!

  • 4-cylinder hot-bulb engine...I didn't think they made them with more than two.
