This young silkie has wry neck, or swelling of the brain. This disorder affects crested birds. I have read that it can be treated with predinsone - but prednisone is a steriod and the dosage is very tricky. This bird was doing well for a time - but eventually developed pnemonia and died from that.
I know many of you are very sad to hear that the bird died - but I have to say this - if you raise any animals you have to accept that you will most likely live longer than they will. Even with the best care - the most advanced medical techniques - and all of the love in the world - animals die. Our job is to do our best to give them a good life while they are in our care.

  • can you tell me how you trained that chicken? I could tell it was semi juevenile by the fact of size, feathering progress, and it still chirps. I have 2 new Silkie bantams and a Auracana, and I'd like to raise them to be human friendly, to the point of being picked up without complaint, or at least eating out of my hand :P

  • @Zeuqe400 we handle our chickens every day - show up with food - be calm around them - they come running when they see us - and love to be picked up. Chickens are very smart and can even be trained to do tricks!

  • HELP my new chick has a wierd lump forming on its chest. im not sure if its normal development or it might be meraks disease. i need advice. PLZ DONT REMOVE THIS COMMENT!

  • @them34 I know this comment was a long time ago - but for future readers - chicks get lumps on their chest after eating - they are stroign the food in their crop befor eit is digested - after a few hours it will go away.

  • I have a silky chicken too but she has a crooked beak.

  • @survivorduck11 I had a girl with cross beak and with a deep dish of food and occasional trim she lived to be over four years old!

  • @them34 it might be its crop-where it stores its food

  • @newzealandgal74

Hi did you got the answer?

    Chick survived or not?

  • @smileforJB The poop might get on your nerves depending what kind of yard you have. I live in a regular house and pressure wash the patio every other day, the smell doesn't bother me at all. As far as the way they themselves smell, I personally sniff their heads and backs while nuzzling them, I love the way they smell, just thinking about it warms me.

  • @alidansma You said it. I have a hen who fell behide the brooderbox when she was little and was stuck there for hours before I noticed her. She has a kink in her neck now, but she is doing great. Is this silkie of yours still around?

  • @smileforJB 2 things, one they don't, and two, they will get somewhat bigger, but they won't be above 3-4 pounds (1-1.8kilos). the one in the video is a juevenile, I'd say 2-3 months in age
