More about Wayfair Engineering at http://engineering.wayfair.com

Wayfair (http://www.wayfair.com) is a leading e-commerce company for home goods. This is an inside look at Wayfair's engineering team based in Boston, MA. Specifically, this video includes interviews with engineers and business leaders who contribute to our world class e-commerce product.

TRANSCRIPT:

[Paul Schwarz, Software Engineer]
One of the cool things about working at Wayfair is that it's a company going from a big company -- we're still a very big company -- but it's growing to a *very* big company.

[Steve Conine, Co-Founder and Chief Architect]
We're building something that will have significant impact in the online community and will be regarded as a great success story.

[Schwarz]
We're moving into the kind of exposure in terms of tech companies that not a lot of other e-commerce sites out there have.

[Shawn Dolan, Sr. Database Administrator]
We've had such high growth. The challenges that you see at $100 million or 100 million views per month is totally different than at 500 million views per month. So how do we really scale that technology? It's something that, if you think about, very few companies in the entire world have (1) had that opportunity to solve, and (2) have actually solved it. So Amazon, obviously, Facebook, and even Travelocity. Those are the sites that we want to be in that tier.

[Conine]
You know, our online retail business is a business of thousands of details. And what ensues from that is we have lots of different projects.

[Dolan]
There's no guide. There's no best practices to follow. It's going out there, testing, trying, reading. So it's really figuring out the answer by ourselves. It becomes a very challenging environment. Something that's very rewarding.

[Drew Searcy, Jr. Systems Engineer]
There's a lot of challenging projects that we work on every day. There's lots of very intelligent people that will help you with anything you need help with.

[Mike O'Hara, VP Engineering]
We believe in hiring the smartest people we can and then empowering them. We want them to be aware of all the business decisions that are being made.

[Sam Jackson, Software Associate]
Here there's a real system of collaboration between the business end and the tech end. And if you don't think something should be done a certain way, you can tell them that and you can work out a solution that works for everyone. It's more like, "Here are our goals, this is what we want done." And you can find the best way to implement that.

[Jonathan Klein, Sr. Software Engineer]
You could be here two weeks in and push out a change that's going to be seen by 10 million people a month.

[Chris McCoy, Jr. Software Engineer]
You get to own all your own projects and it's really nice to work with a group of people that are so helpful and know exactly when you need help and when you don't need help.

[O'Hara]
We're going to definitely challenge you with projects, and we need you to step up and be able to rise to the occasion and do well on those projects and work hard. But also, we really want you to play hard while you're doing it and have a lot of fun coming to work.

[Conine]
We've made it the type of place to work at that has a very good work/life balance. We're not running it as a sprint. We think of it more as a marathon. You need to make sure that when you come in to work every day that, by and large, you like coming into work. You enjoy it, you look forward to it when you get up in the morning.
