The Ride of Paul Revere

Words- Paul Colwell
Music- Ralph Colwell

They saw two lanterns in the North Church tower.
They knew this was to be the fateful hour.
For a man to ride and to alarm
Ev'ry village and ev'ry farm -
To awaken them, and call to arm,
It was the ride of Paul Revere!

CHORUS
Ride! Ride! Tho' the night be cold.
Ride! Ride! Till the truth be told!
Ride! Ride! Like that man of old!
Ride like Paul Revere!

In Seventy-Five upon an April night,
Ride! Ride!
The air was chilly and the moon shone bright.
Ride! Ride!
They rowed him past the man-of-war,
Landed on the Charlestown shore
Where the finest steed was ready for
The ride of Paul Revere!

(CHORUS)

Arrived in Medford town at twelve o'clock
Ride! Ride!
And there alerted Adams, and Hancock.
Ride! Ride!
Ev'ry house, didn't miss a one,
Was aroused on that midnight run,
All the way to Lexington
On the ride of Paul Revere!

(CHORUS)

I wonder if, two hundred years ahead,
Ride! Ride!
If they will ride, or if they'll stay in bed.
Ride! Ride!
If faith and freedom within them die
And then they hear the midnight cry -
And the hoof-beats cross the moonlit sky,
Will they ride with Paul Revere?

(CHORUS)

  • @MrAxelLF Yeah. Don't think I can afford Hawaii. Especially with guitars and amps. :)

  • @ArtR0001 The only reunion I found on YouTube was that of Sing Out Hilo. I made a bold move and invited ourselves to their 2012 reunion.

  • @MrAxelLF Would love to see those Lyrics. We also sang one for Delaware that someone up there wrote. somewhere I have lyrics to "Panama" as well. quite a peppy song itself.

You know, it's kind of a shame, National casts have reunions, but UWP doesn't seem to encourage regional groups any more. I guess it has been a financial issue since the 80's. But I would certainly attend a gathering of East Coast Sing Outs just to see how all the other groups were doing what we did.

  • @ArtR0001 I just went through some of our Sing Out mementos and even found a reprint of an article about Up with People in Reader's Digest which was in their May, 1967 issue. Also found a piece of paper with the lyrics of Sing Out St. Petersburg and Viva La Gente. The lyrics and music of the song Sing Out St. Petersburg was written by fellow cast members.

  • @MrAxelLF I completely agree. Some seem to be written especially for this century. I'm still looking for sheet music for "Children" which is a song that Frank Fields wrote sometime after 1968. By the way, although from Baltimore, I live in Largo, FL now. I had the pleasure of singing with Sing Out Panama at Ft. Slocum in 68 and Sing Out Japan when they visited in 1969. Some really great memories.

  • @ArtR0001 During that time period many Up with People casts sprung up so as you probably know. I don't know exactly how I got involved, but I enjoyed every minute of it. Indeed those lyrics and melodies stick with you, because they are as timely now as they were then.

  • @MrAxelLF Wow! St Pete had a Sing Out? I was in Sing Out Baltimore from about 67 to 70/71. Still know most of these songs. It's scary how the lyrics and melodies stick with you.

  • Gee, had Sara Palin listened to this beforehand, she would have gotten her facts straight.

  • @basketmaker1 I was stationed at Mac Dill AFB when I joined Sing Out St. Petersburg, We still have the Up with People song book. I do remember performing in Miami once, in fact that was one of our first performances and on the road to Miami a couple the people composed and wrote the lyrics to our cast song. Somewhere in our files I still have pictures of some of our performances. After I was discharged we moved to Cincinnati and my wife and I became advisors to Sing Out Cincinnati.

  • @MrAxelLF

Can't remember exactly but Sing Out Miami traveled to Tampa/St. Pete and we performed a joint show. Only thing I can remember is we stayed at the Bucaneer Motel? It was the furthest we went from Miami.
