The administration's recommendations for closing schools is scheduled to be released next month. This video, from the September School Board meeting, is offered to provide context for those recommendations and what is likely to be subsequent lively and painful debate.
In this segment, the Board and administration discuss why enrollments in some schools are falling and neighborhood demographics, as well as students who migrate back and forth between private schools and MPS.
Board member Peter Blewett: "My concern is that a school that offers all these different programs, may be overextending itself and may not be viable to follow through on the promises that it makes. The concern I have is that a student drops out of a school, a public school where we know what they're getting, and then loses a certain amount of academic time because they're not receiving appropriate services. So if a school closes, then those students come back into Milwaukee Public Schools, we're forced to spend special education dollars and other dollars to bring those kids back up to where they should be because they've lost progress... And I'm just wondering, how can we find out, get an accurate picture, of what's happening in the various neighborhoods around the city?"
