임기를 1년 남짓 남겨둔 부시 대통령이 평화의 중재자를 자처하며 중동지역 순방에 나섰다. 순방기간 중 그는 특히 이팔문제 해결에 대한 강력한 의지를 보였다. 하지 만 그를 맞이하는 현지의 분위기는 냉담하기만 했다. 특히 부시가 다녀간 후 이스라 엘과 팔레스타인 사이 폭력 사태가 급증하며 부시의 노력을 무색하게 만들었다. 올 해로 건국 60주년을 맞이하는 이스라엘에는 건국 이후 한 번도 평화가 찾아온 적이 없다. 제작진이 찾아간 이스라엘의 슈데롯은 가자 지구에서 가장 가까운 마을로 수시로 로 켓이 날아와 주민들의 생명을 위협하는 곳이다. 취재기간 중에도 로켓이 날아와 그 피해현장을 확인할 수 있었다. 쇼핑, 영화구경 같은 일상의 작은 즐거움조차 잃어버 린 채 생명의 위협 속에 사는 사람들. 이러한 불안함과 두려움은 팔레스타인 사람들 에게도 마찬가지이다. 이스라엘이 건설한 670km의 장벽에 가로막혀 가족과 헤어지 고 삶의 공간이 분리된 사람들, 심지어 자신들의 땅에서조차 570개의 검문소들이 생 활의 자유를 빼앗아버렸다. 에서는 한국 방송사 중 단독으로 이스라엘을 방문한 부시의 회담 현장을 취재했 다. 더불어 끝없는 갈등 속에 고통 받는 이스라엘과 팔레스타인 주민들의 모습을 집 중 취재했다.
