Note: Very sorry for the poor quality of the picture near the end of this clip. The VCR tape I had this recorded on was showing its age and I was concerned that I was going to lose this entire show because of that.
I know that there is other YouTube uploads of this scene. You may want to look them up for better quality than this clip.
At the end of this clip, fireworks go off at one of Stadium Australia, as the cauldron itself was assisted mechanically, to officially conclude the opening ceremony of these Games.

Why did they get an 'Aboriginal' to light it? In the past they killed them, took away their land, couldn't bring themselves to say sorry until recently. Treated them as a subspecies, marginalised them. Welcome to Australia.
Yes, it was stuck for 5 agonizing minutes. I was there in the upper rafters... i remember seeing it 'stall' thinking - oh dear! but then after 5 mins it started again. Proud to be australian, always will be - this was amazing fault or not.
This was the most amazing olympic torch lighting ever. You just have to see it to believe it. I'm impressed with the engineers and artists who designed such an amazing olympic torch which had so much movement, so much water and so much fire. There is so much that could go wrong with a cauldron like this but they pulled it off sucessfully. And the perfect choice to light it, a great athlete and very beautiful woman, Cathy Freeman!!!
