First of all let me say this is not a faithful rendition of Ms Lungstuffings song, cos I don't have her vocal range and secondly some of the words might be wrong or even missing. I am not even sure if the chords are correct, (Dm A7 G7) but it is an incredible and quite disturbing song and I wanted to cover it.

Check out the original here

Anyways about the song itself it would seem to be about the abuse and abandonment of a doll. The cutting of the hair, the loss of clothing, disfigurement, being dragged around, savaged by a dog, and left alone and abandoned in the dirt.

The passage of time moves from innocence and beauty to nakedness and distress.

Transference is a phenomenon in psychoanalysis characterized by unconscious redirection of feelings from one person to another, or perhaps in this case from a person to a doll. So it is a many layered song and when I heard it first I was confused as to whether it was a song about a doll or a person... and therein lies the poetical tension.

The footage is from a doll convention in Baltimore which featured specialized Japanese ball jointed dolls, and it in itself is a world I know nothing about. I just stumbled apon it while looking for open source films that were in the public domain and would allow remixing, with attribution.

The original film was made by Kimberly Keyes Stark and in the editing process I tried to avoid as much as possible the actual participants at the convention and tended to concentrate on the dolls themselves, some of which are very beautiful. The end shot of two dolls in an tender embrace made me stop and think. Obviously the dolls were positioned in a pose that was tender and caring, and perhaps that is the hope and longing of the person who owns the dolls... perhaps Ms Lungstuffing's Puppetrina would know.

I have tried to be as sensitive as possible and I hope I have not misrepresented the words, the melody, the film footage, or the sentiments.

If I have let me know.

  • I like your suggestion to consider the psychology of this song. We have all heard little girls unconsciously speaking of their dolls as extensions of themselves, attributing their feelings to the dolls. It's an ingenious mechanism, allowing both role play and distance. This song is something, and this performance is yet another example of how ably you reinterpret things. Always thought-provoking.

Very perceptive Don... I was just wondering about why so many of the doll owners and dolls were dressed alike. Also there is one girl at about 2:15 that is sorting through a big pile of her dolls clothes and wigs and I thought if they come from a family where they are not allowed to express themselves through dress or hair styles then they can experiment safely on their dolls and live an outrageous and ostentatious life vicariously through their dolls

  • wow!!!!!!....That is truely amazing!!!!You completely transcended the song!!....now...if i ever have the time, I wanna make a video that features my collection of old dolls......

  • @poopylungstuffing

Well it was news to me that in America you have doll conventions. I have often wondered about your use of Puppetrina in your videos.

It almost seems that she can say things that are only floating about in your subconscious. For example if she is unhappy she will say so, whereas the social mores would dictate that we all suffer in silence

  • Poopy Lungstuffing's great song, and your video inspired me to have a go too.

  • Great interpretation of Poopy's excellent song. You really did it justice. The chords are Dm A7 & Gm I think, though. Not the G7 mentioned in your notes.

  • Love your version, cool vocals.
