IFCUs 23rd General Assembly

The 23rd General Assembly of the International Federation of Catholic Universities (IFCU), carrying the theme “The Catholic University in Post-Modern Societies”, is underway in Rome from November 16th through the 20th.The opening ceremony began with a Eucharistic celebration presided over by the Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education, Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski, followed by the inaugural ceremony at the Pontifical Gregorian University’s Aula Magna, the event’s main venue.The IFCU president accentuated the importance of this international meeting, which is held every three years in different parts of the world.“We were founded in 1924 and canonically recognized in 1949. So this is our 85th anniversary, but also our 60th anniversary of our formal recognition by the Holy See.“The International Federation of Catholic Universities is the oldest and the largest association of Catholic Universities, gathered together from all the continents of the world to help one another to affirm their Catholic identity and to fulfil their mission as Catholic Universities in the world.”Cardinal Grocholewski affirmed that Catholic Universities do not merely convey knowledge, they also form people -- a fact which highlights the importance of Catholic Universities in the world today.“It is important to not only transmit the faith, but to also form people; people who want to use what they learn for the good, people who want and know how to use their knowledge for the good of humanity, not for evil. It seems to me that this is why Catholic universities are very important, besides the fact that its very mission is to make the Gospel known to the world, to enrich the world with the great values of the Gospel.”
