Retrospect - Fraser Institute Video Contest 2010

Martin, a young activist, is detained and secluded by the police for questioning regarding a local protest. While being questioned Martin loses his consciousness and experiences a flashback into a childhood memory. During the flashback, Martin recalls his grandfather explaining that even though regulations are often created for the well being of society, over the passage of time the accumulation of regulations can turn into "extremes" without restraint. Martin's grandfather prophetically mentions the loss of freedom to protest as an "extreme" which Martin may experience during his lifetime. When Martin regains consciousness he manages to escape from the guard. Once the guard discovers that Martin is missing, backup is requested in order to pursue Martin. The agent, who had previously questioned Martin, manages to catch up to him. After a brief chase the agent draws a gun and fires it at Martin. A bullet, fired by the agent, which represents the tyranny and dictatorship of an over controlling state kills Martin. While lying on the ground, Martin's body dissipates into the rights and ideals which his generation has lost.

@CharlesCMortomer, Thank you for your support! This video does not suggest that Canada, or any country for that matter, is currently executing activists. The storyline gives a fictitious example of the possible effects of an over controlling government. Hence, this story could have taken place in any country or period of time. Although “Retrospect” examines an extreme scenario, it is important for people to recognize the potential consequences of an over controlling government.
