Well, better the bike than you. You're extremely lucky to have escaped unscathed in that situation. The same thing happened to a family friend when he had his wife on the back, they both survived, but they were both very seriously injured. In California effective July 1 talking on a cell phone (w/o a hands-free set) while driving will result in a $1000 fine. It won't do much good, but hey, they're trying.
