Thank god a smart person! There are so many, many people and even fireman who suggest transfer solutions that might endanger themselves or others for any number of reasons, (Google; back feeding) They all claim that it is their right to do it their way no matter the risk... so sad. The only suggestion I'd make to you sir is to put a CO/smoke detector near the panel so if the generator fumes come in you will be safe. Also if someone else energizes too many circuits and overloads the box.
The best thing you did was hire a pro.
