I heard Gulyak at a concert last year (Rach 3) and was overwhelmed by her performance! I think she will surpass Argerich.
This recording shows plenty of her flair with a seldom-played work. I had a bash at it myself, in my youth, and I can testify it is fiendishly difficult (more so than Chopin's other sonatas)!
It probably doesn't have as much oomph to captivate the audience, as do the B-flat-minor and B-minor. Think of it as more of a classical study. But still a pleasure to listen to.
Well not totally free of the melancholy, but it had not yet fully sunk in to his composing as it would later. Also, his sound is still somewhat formative. You can hear the heavy influence of Beetoven and Bach.
The performer makes a lot of mistakes, but does a good job at trying to capture the spirit of the piece.
imagine this interpretation on a good steinway recorded professionally, you would appreciate the difference and understand the value of this virtuous interpretation.
