Chapter 5 in a beginners journey to learning the Double/Upright bass
Playing to a Jamey Aebersold jazz playalong Vol. 11 Herbie Hancock, the track "Maiden voyage".
Im trying to get my bearings with the open D string and the D octave harmonic on the G string - Its good to navigate with open strings as safety falllbacks.
Im playing in tune more than 60% of the time;-)
Recorded direct from the piezo pickup

  • i love how there seems to be a que off assholes shooting this guy down.... when it's most obviously because his bass guitar playing is amazing and flawless.... so because he has introduced his learning progress on another instrument to the world the jealous bass players feel they can finally criticize this dude... when clearly... he knows damn fine what he is doing and excels at anything he attempts ;)

get it right up ye !!! (to the haters)

  • @mrbassman25 Not that i know what Im doing, but thx anyway for the support:-)

  • i guess what they mean is, you can probably get the index finger on your right hand to be more parallel to the string, so that way you can pull the string with the side of your finger, and really try going for the knuckle. look for any Charles Mingus videos and you'll get the idea.

BTW, very inspiring to see you working on the upright. You are going to be totally awesome very quickly! Right on!

  • @bijouxmusic Thx and yes, Its going better with pulling now, watch out for the next video;-)

  • I don't mean to be offensive, but your picking technique is not correct...

You should not use the tip of your finger like you would on an electric bass, you should use the side of your finger like the guy in the video. Nice hat btw. ;-)

    Happy playing!

  • @Meaca Non taken, and im working on the right hand picking:-)

  • I believe that what counts is what comes out of the instrument (technique or no technique)! It is like a musician that reads charts vs another that doesn't read but can still play!!! When you hear a recording, what counts is what comes out and not techniques, and how you look, etc.

  • Takes a lot of courage to expose yourself as a new instrument apprentice. I salute you as I admire your bass playing technique and I'm sure that your detractors will soon "that their hats" for you too. Keep up and thanks a lot for all your precious lessons!!

  • Stanley Clarke plays the electric with the finger position of a stand up bass ... he's doing it wrong! What a noob Stanley is. :P It sounds nice regardless of your fingering (she said). Also, one thing is perfect ... that jazz hat! :)

  • @mrbassman25 I agree. DK offers many good things, especially on the electric that are very useful for anyone interested in contemporary bass styles and performance. An arranger can learn more about the instrument just by watching and listening. Of course, he would want to shed on technique for his acoustic playing if he wants to master that.

  • @MarloweDK Hi Marlow. Meaca is incorrect. You can use any fingering techniques that fit according to the situation. Playing with your finger parallel to the bass is ok in slow tempo's where one finger on your hand can handle it but when the tempo gets fierce or you have to solo or play complicated things 2 fingers is absolutely fine if not necessary.

  • Indeed!

  • nice playing... i find Ray Brown's bass method is the best for physical playing of the double bass... and the bow...! el arco...! where one sweats and curses...

  • What bass is that?

    Nice video ;-)

  • Oh man, totally designed again,...

  • Great playing. I understand the experiences in switching, but a bassplayer is a bassplayer! Come on!
