The frontrunner in Costa Rica's 2010 presidential vote Laura Chinchilla, promises to reduce drug trafficking and crime, if she replaces President Oscar Arias. And with crime on the rise, its a top concern for voters.

[Laura Chinchilla, National Liberation Party Candidate]:
"Most of the violence affecting Costa Rica is related to drug trafficking gangs hitting all of Latin America. During the second quarter, we need to have better coordination among judges and prosecutors to reduce impunity."

Chinchilla is aiming to leverage her experience as Public Security Minister to gain voter support. Shes also hoping to seal free trade deals with China, the European Union and Singapore.

Costa Rica is expected to conclude a sixth and final round of free trade negotiations with China just after the February 7th election. Two years ago, the country ended 60-year diplomatic ties with Taiwan, in order to curry favor with the Mainlands communist regime.

Otton Solis from the Citizens Action Party trails Chinchilla by 18 percent. He was a three-time presidential candidate who Arias defeated in a contested runoff vote in 2006.

[Otton Solis, Citizens Action Party]
Costa Rica believed that by signing legal documents and free trade agreements this would automatically happen. We think we must invest in education to form a productive work force, invest in science and technology and depoliticize the state and make it more effective.

Chinchilla needs at least 40 percent of the vote to avoid a second-round runoff. Consecutive term limits bars Oscar Arias from running in this election.

  • I am also from Costa Rica. Truth is Otton Solis does not like to recognise the will of the mayority.

"Liberacion Nacional" wants another term, so they can apply the social regulations for CAFTA.

You mention corruption. Prove your allegations.

  • Don`t believe me? Here is in spanish, listen closely 1: 37 to 1:54 and you will see:

"Para ver esas encuestas hay que ver lo que pasó en la campaña pasada que quince dias antes las encuestas supuestamente le daban a don Oscar Arias veinte puntos de diferencia y casi ganamos y nosotros sabemos que estamos ganando, y una buena indicacion de eso es que el gobierno nos ha atacado todas las semanas"

  • From 1:37 to 1:54, the candidate Ottón Solís say other thing diferent than you translate. He says:

"To see these polls, we have to see what happened last elections, than fifteen days before, the polls gave to Oscar Arias twenty points of difference and we almost won, and we know we're winning, and a good indication of that is that the government has attacked us every week"

What happened? Why NTDT don`t put the right words? Are they suporting Laura Chinchilla? That`s would be unfair.

  • I am from Costa Rica, and for those who don´t know, during the disscussion of Cafta in 2007, (When candidate Laura Chinchilla was second vicepresident) the first vicepresident and one congressman send a letter to the president Oscar Arias to promove the FEAR in the population.

And now they want to keep the power, with lies, corruption and making us every day more poors.
