SelectPlusMagazine's 'satirical' Obama Cover Stirs OutrageMagazine's 'satirical' Obama Cover Stirs OutrageThe Associated PressA satirical New Yorker magazine cover cartoon depicting Barack Obama and his wife as flag-burning, fist-bumping radicals drew outrage from the Democratic presidential candidate's campaign as it appeared on newsstands Monday. (July 14)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] [Notes:Vid magazine cover]Barack Obama's campaign is calling it tasteless and offensive. It's a satirical New Yorker magazine cover showing Obama dressed as a Muslim ... his wife as a terrorist. [Notes:SOT Patrick Egan, Assistant Professor of Politics at New York University: "If this were on the cover of Time magazine or Newsweek, I would be more likely to think that this would be perpetuating false beliefs. "] The cover also shows an American flag burning in the fireplace ... and a picture of Osama bin Laden hangs on the wall. [Notes:Vid Obama at presser]When asked about the magazine ... Obama had nothing to say. [Notes:NATS "I have no response to that"] [Notes:VID NYC street]But some New York City resident did. [Notes:SOT Will Minton, New York resident: "I see it more playing into the stereotypes that have been established during the campaign than anything based on racial, but there is definitely going to be that interpretation out there."] [Notes:SOT Anthony Rutkiewicz, New York resident: "Like I said, I see some kind of racism here with that thing on his head and right now he's Christian, most of his people that are voting for him are Christians."][Notes:Vid McCain]And Obama's rival for the White House ... Republican John McCain ... Had this to say: [Notes:SOT John McCain: "totally inappropriate, and frankly I understand if Senator Obama and his supporters would find it offensive."][Notes:Vod shots New Yorker sign] Responding to the cover's criticism .... The New Yorker's editor. [Notes:SOT David Remnick, editor of "The New Yorker": "The intent of the cover is to satirise the vicious and racist attacks and rumours and misconceptions about the Obamas that have been floating around in the blogo-sphere and are reflected in public opinion polls."][Notes:Various vid Obama] The cartoon is not explained inside the magazine. But the issue does feature a 15-thousand-word story about Obama's political education and early years in Chicago. ___ ___, The Associated Press.(****END****) ANCHOR VOICE: Sandy Kozel-------------------------VIDEO PRODUCER: Nicole Grether------------------------------VID EO SOURCE: AP--------------------------VIDEO APPROVAL: Donna Starddard------------------------------V IDEO RESTRICTIONS: none----------------------------------SC RIPT/WIRE SOURCE: BC-Obama-New Yorker, 5th Ld-Writethru,630------------------------ ------------

Only Americans from less diverse soccer mom states think Obama is a "terrorist". It's very typical of them do think the way they do. Those soccer mom type americans are very very stuck in the 1950s.
When you've grown up in a diverse city where you even meet arabs you can actually see that they're humans too as well as Americans.
SCW thats false. The Cartoon does NOT mock the Obama's if you read the caption in the magazine it says "The Politics of Fear".White Racists and Supremaicsts don't Fear the Obama's being Muslim or Terroists they fear they will dispell the MYTH(the LIE)that Whites are Superior and will take the power of White Racists and Supremacists away and they should be mocked. Hi Realbrother3, I understand that the intent of the cartoon is to mock/saterize the dopes who are afraid of the Obamas. I get that. However, the picture, at first glance, looks anti-Obama, and those who are anti-Obama will take it as a mockery of the Obamas, and that is unfortunate. If the cartoonist had directly saterized the foolish fear-mongers it would have been far more effective. That is my opinion. Carry on. Obama 08!!
Oh ok, "dumbass Americans" made me think you were from another country. But nevertheless, it's true! We do have a ton of crazy things going on, even though other countries do as well.
I've heard that point made before and it does bring light one of the inequalities in our system. However, I think it is better than doing absolutely nothing for them. What do you suggest to battle racism- social and corporate?

I agree with you! Once the latest affirmative action legislation was implemented (circa 1970), equality and fairness has been completely ignored in favor of minorities.
Thank you for understanding that Race preferential legislation IS racism.
We should ask our leaders, "what right does a government have in treating one race more favorably than another?"
