DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME...

I'm an experienced parrotlet breeder and have been doing this for over two decades. I've learned this technique from an avian veterinarian.

This video is to educate you in the event that your parrotlet is egg bound. If you think your parrotlet or parrot is egg bound call your local vet. Death can result in your parrotlet or parrot being egg bound and not taking proper action.

I noticed that the parrotlet hen shown is this video was acting strange and that she had an enlarged vent area over the past week and no eggs in the box.

This method was done while placing the parrotlet gently in my hand and over a cooking pot containing boiling water. This allows you to use the steam to relax the vent area permitting the egg to extract from the parrotlet's vent.

This procedure took 30 minutes to complete. Rushing this procedure can damage the egg causing a serious infection that will ultimately result in death.

***We should also note that this is VERY rare for a female parrotlet to become egg bound. In over 20+ years of breeding, this has happened just a couple of times. This parrotlet hen was 4 years old and this was going to be her last clutch of eggs/babies. We retired her from our breeding program and she is now living out the rest of her days in a beautiful aviary in a retirement home where her she can be admired for her beauty and the elderly can watch her in peaceful enjoyment. ***

  • isnt that painful for the bird?

  • @demzlovatofan1 I'm sure it was not comfortable for her. Almost like a woman having a child. Thankfully we were able to save her without her passing away. She is doing just wonderful now!

  • This is why I want a male. Then I don't have to worry about health problems that can come from a hen like becoming egg bound and calcium deficiencies. Maybe when I have more experience with birds I'll get a female.

  • @picatsoforfma This was actually an isolated incident that happened with this female. Rarely have we ever had this happen. Even with proper diet, cuttlebone, and liquid calcium, it can occur, but as I mentioned, it is rare that this should ever happen. She is now retired and living her life happily ever after in a huge flight aviary with all of our other retirees. :) Don't let this deter you from getting a little girl. They make excellent pets too! :)

  • how long until u know that the parrotlet is egg bound?

...its been a little over a week....my parrotlet laid one egg and i know she had atleast one more in her...but its taking forever for her to lay...im getting worried

  • Your parrotlet should have laid the egg by now. Most parrotlets lay every to every other day. Take her to the vet if you are unsure. Better to be safe than sorry!
