Marcus Miller was like 23 during this....

@chefacec1 I become vitriolic when people say this. Miles picked Stern up from nowhere (a back up guitar for Blood Sweat and Tears and Billy Cobham's band) and made his career. This is Miles' song. You may prefer Stern's version and like Stern's solo, but it's Miles' composition and arrangement; there's only one genius at work here.

@Asymmatrix I removed that comment about Marsalis because it was impertinent, and I felt like I'd be offending people who didn't know this and liked him.
The era from In a Silent Way to JJ is truly incomparable. I could listen to the Rolling Stones for a month, the Beatles for two months, Dylan for a year, Miles for a lifetime.

Nuts to people who say that miles wasn't brilliant in his later years

and another "also," thanks so much Asymmatrix for uploading this. I have the compilation versions which are all studio. I suspect Miles meant this to be live and raw; this is the only real version.

also i just listened through my Grados and nearly had an orgasm

@LeonSpinx1 Agreed Marsalis is a pompous bore. Still listening to Tribute to JJ 42 years later. One of the greatest albums ever made imo. I'm sure Marsalis hates it.

@DukeVian Jean Pierre was the name of Frances Taylor's son (a son she had from a former wedding).
