Today, I went fishing for halibut out in Newport. This video footage is at the dock where many boats that were catching halibut go to clean the fish and remove the meat from the rest of the body. We caught two of these fish. I reeled up one of them.
We sailed an hour and half west from Newport to go where this fish are. They are gigantic---weighing between 30-50 pounds and 30-40 inches long. And they are HARD to feel in, even if you have a strong fishing pole. These fish spend the majority of their lives just laying flat on the bottom of the ocean, and yes, you have to cast your line all the way down there--around 500-600 feet. That means you are reeling them in and struggling with them for the distance of two football fields. But it was worth it. Many view halibut as the best fish to eat in the world, and I would tend to agree. I had some this evening, and yes, it was very good.
