Rugby IQ's skills specialist Dave Williams takes players at an Eagles 7's camp through a technique called the Saddle Roll which is used when cleaning out an opposing fetcher that is going after the ball and is set in a strong base.
Sometimes this is not the last resort... If the cleaning player arrives and the fetcher is already securing the ball there is no use in trying to smash him back, as all you are doing is helping the fetcher get the ball onto their side quicker. If the fetcher is locked on the ball, the first action should be to roll him.
I do agree that the roll needs to be aggressive enough so the cleaner ends up on top to recycle themselves 1st. Good point.
