1) Stone and Acid - $60. Quite simply, any piece of precious metal can be scratched and 99% of the time give an accurate kt, even a Neanderthal can do it.
2) GLX-24 Pro tester - $500. Quite simply a ritzy-Cali tester so you don't scratch a person's precious jewelry, with p.o.s. customer service. You can use it on someones Tiffany&Co necklace to make them happy, but I advise against using this to buy gold on anything over 1mm thick.
Think of how you will use it and if its even worth the money

How well do these testers work on plated stuff ? How can you make an accurate estimate of the precious metal in them ?

Um, this just appears to test the surface. How's it going to detect a gold plated coin is fake (i.e. not solid gold)?
