"I don't care if the union thugs hate my guts. I don't care if the government employees hate my guts," says Dale Ogden, the Libertarian Party candidate in the California governor's race. Ogden vows to get the state's fiscal house back in order by returning government spending to at least 1998 levels, before Gray Davis assumed the governor's office and acted, in what Ogden calls, "criminal collusion" with the public-sector unions to secure pension hikes.

Ogden sat down with Reason.tv's Tim Cavanaugh to talk about why neither Democratic candidate Jerry Brown nor Republican Meg Whitman have the political will to pull California's government out of its budget hole.

Approximately 9:45 minutes. Interview by Tim Cavanaugh. Camera by Paul Detrick, Zach Weissmueller and Austin Bragg. Edited by Weissmueller.

  • If you owned a company, would you sign a contract w/ your workers that legally guaranteed them a 90% pension for life after 30 years?

The government is an illegitimate organization because it uses violence to get its funding. Therefore, the employment/pension contracts are null and void.

  • I voted for Ogden

  • Jerry Brown will destroy what is left of our economy.

  • @032125 Yeah the same thing can be said about the Department of Interior. Deficits explode when social welfare is done at a federal level. I think social welfare should be done at a state or local level.

  • @FireGuyX There is nothing so permanent as a temporary government program - Milton Friedman.

Keep in mind that the sugar industry has been subsidized since the War of 1812. Why was it subsidized? Because it was an "infant industry". Seriously.

  • This guy has some good ideas but its no surprise he didn't get elected. The Democrats are in bed with the public sector unions so got a lot of backing from them. Those same unions are expecting payback from the politicians so nothing is going to change. On illegal immigration the focus should be on the people that hire illegals. It seems like a waste of time trying to close such a long and porous border.

  • @safewaysecurity me too!

  • dont have anything against him, but damn hes a fat bastard. his whole mouth area is sweating

  • Yeah, open borders . . . isn't this a little idealistic? Not reality.

  • One big problem with politics today is that we view and talk about it like it's a game. Candidates are either winners or losers, not based on their principles, but how they position themselves with respect to the spectrum of issues. So most candidates play the game and try to figure out what they need to say to get elected. You've got to admire a guy who says, "This is what I stand for, whether you like it or not." "I'm just offering you the choice." Thanks Dale and good luck.

  • @redlightmax Yeah, because electing the handsome candidate has served Californians so well over the years ... Fat and ugly is working wonders in New Jersey, California should try it for a change.
