@hellsunicorn Darwin has also been misunderstood. He went to great extent to define his theory of self interest. That species cooperate within their species and with each other when it is MUTUALLY dependent, and thus man is moral and cares for not only his fellow man but for lesser species. Darwin was attacked by both secularist intellectuals and the church intellectuals because he represented a threat to both. That's why he waited 30yrs to publish Origin of The Species.

@francispearson Atheists probably disliked this video.

It seems funny to me that anyone would dislike this.

@hellsunicorn: Well, arguably the Shinto religion gave us biological warfare. It was developed by the Imperial Japanese gov't in WWII to redress their strategic disadvantage. That gov't did fight in the name of the Shinto religion.
-
@MrAkilleus Which religion was involved in The Manhattan Project? Which religion wiped out a good chunk of Russia's and China's population? And which religion gave us chemical and biological warfare?
Evil is a human problem, and if religion has done anything positive for science, it has kept it from fully collapsing into a eugenicist nightmare the way many Darwinist followers would like to see it become if they had no opposition.
There is no presupposed system of ethics in science.
-
@MrAkilleus: Religion is believed in by people. If a person is religious & accomplishes some great good, then it is reasonable to believe his beliefs played some role in what he accomplished.
-
@robzrob: Are you a libertarian or an anarchist? Some people don't seem to know the difference & there is an important one. If one accepts the need for gov't then one IS accepting the need for some coercion in this world. Gov'ts only exist to coerce. If it is merely coercing criminals into refraining from criminality, then coercion is a positive good. It is a matter or fighting fire w/ fire.
-
Given that, shouldn't you at least give this a chance?

@amaqula @amaqula Atheism is the true nature a mankind. Religion, such as Catholicism, preys on the weak such as children and is used for power and evil as we have seen very much recently. If you have not realized this, you will soon. An Ikos poll done just last month shows only 29% of UK'ers believe religion is good. Religion is afraid of people of having knowledge because then the church will have a harder time in controlling those people.

Positive influence on science? Ever heard of the Spanish inquisition? The persecution of scientists in 16th century? Please, say one positive thing that religion, and then I mean religion and not a religious person. Just one!
I liked Mr Woods's libertarian stuff, but I'm not so sure about this.

@robzrob I would encourage you to read Dr. Wood's book on the subject entitled, "How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization." Furthermore, it would be wise to study hid source material.
Keep in mind this is not a sanction for either theocracy, a promotion of Catholic apologetics, or necessarily an encouragement to become Catholic but rather a simple acknowledgment to the Catholic Church's major contribution to the rebuilding of Western civilization after the fall of the ancient West.

@Mechanized0 Assume I've read and agree with all you've mentioned. I still find it astonishing that a libertarian would want, in any way, to be associated with an organisation that, not now, but in the past, was so coercive.
I don't agree that this is not one or more of the things you say it's not. Perhaps if there was a series called something like 'Keynes Wasn't All Bad by Thomas E Woods', I might think that Mr Woods was being neutral here.

@robzrob Perhaps there is more in his words than most are willing to acknowledge. Additionally, please recall that Dr. Woods was not raised Catholic but evangelical.
Additionally, keep in mind that Austrian economics' roots stemmed from the Jesuit and Dominican scholastics of 15th century Spain. For more information one can either read his book or view the following link:
