@percdann Thorpe took swimming to a new level, far more than Hoogie, and in reality Spitz "only" had 1 amazing meet (understatement of the century I know). Phelps is undisputed, but it's actually Dawn Fraser and Krisztina Egerszegi who are next best, then Thorpe, then Spitz. Hoogie not in that group, he's with Evans and Mary T and Shane Gould.... that's my take anyway :)

love to hear the Yanks be as gracious about Thorpe as we are about Phelps. Much respect to both.

@Questionable23 Oh yea, I totally get it, and i believe that phelps is the best swimmer there has ever been, but after that i put hoogie, then spitz, then i would rank thorpe and POPOV, who is also all too forgotten. He was a great swimmer.

I'm American but a Thorpe fan. Who knows why we prefer certain athletes. Maybe it's his very smooth, loping style, in addition to how well spoken he his out of the pool. He doesn't seem like a "jock."

Thorpe's costume is simply FANTASTIC

Without a doubt, Hoogenband is a great swimmer, one of my faves. However, i think majority of the viewers of this video are Australian, American, British and not from the Netherlands... That's why you constantly see/hear praise for phelps and thorpe... It's a patriotic thing. ;)

lol yank commentators make me laugh

It's funny that Dara Tores is commentating on this race, when her career isn't even over, haha. She probably didn't know she was heading for a bronze medal in beijing 4 years later.

Wow. That bitch commentator really hates Thorpe. She constantly slags him off in the 200m free video
Its crazy to think that five years later we are going almost three seconds faster!

thorpe was the 400 free wr holder, 400 free world champ, and defending 400 free olympic champ.
If there had been another 10-20 metres more, thorpe would have extended his margin of victory.
