Music from Australia and New Zealand in the year 1985:

The James Baker Experience's promo-video for the single 'You're Gonna Be Punched'.

James Baker played with Dave Faulkner as drummer in Perth punk band The Victims during the late '70's. He then drummed with The Scientists featuring Kim Salmon. In 1981, he rejoined Dave Faulkner in his new band (Le) Hoodoo Gurus.

After considerable commercial success and international attention; James Baker left the Hoodoo Gurus in 1984 and signed to the new Red Eye records. The single 'You're Gonna Be Punched' was the first release issued by Red Eye and features a young Tex Perkins on drums.

Perkins and Baker also played together in the Beasts Of Bourbon during the mid 1980's.

  • YOUR A PEDOPHILE!!!!!!!! stop pedophiling him

  • you're nuts! just like your dad!

    :-P

  • I was the engineer on this recording at Kings Lane Studios in Darlinghurst, Sydney. There was more beer consumed during this session than any i've come across before or since. It was a very fun day...from what I can remember...which isn't much!

  • This was recorded in one live session, was it not?

  • I think it was pretty much live but James definitely did overdub a vocal because I remember he took a short nap in the darkened vocal booth while we were doing the take and we heard him snoring while we rewound the tape. Someone, possibly Tex, went in and prodded him back to consciousness with a drum stick. It was classic!

  • lol, excellent! There should be a book written about this period and that story should be included!

  • Why did he leave the Gurus? Kinda wondered for about this occasionally for about, eh, 30 years? Hearing this now in 2011, puts a new perfume in the air of the question.

  • You might be interested in knowing that this version of 'Born to Be Punched' clocked in at 3 min:38 Secs - When Red Eye Records issued their CD compilation "Asides & Besides: The First Five Years" 'Born to Be Punched' is only almost 5 secs shorter.

Either the pitch during mastering from the CD was wrong, or this single was mastered on a slow pitch. Having compared both versions, I have found the shorter version might be the correct version

  • Hey James, you still owe me money!

  • Thanks for the loan of a crash/ride at the corner of Alexander and Brunswick back in 1984 or there abouts. I have 2 adults 1 is ready steady go. Jess is the best. Lock up your daughters, There is; My Son is in town;

  • It has all the elements to influence youth from a different angle.

Instead of a glitz studio with big names, have an act do all the glitzy things associated with being a star- especially when it's obviously shoe string budget & straight off the street,

This appeals to another side of youth that want to make things happen with thier bare hands & can somehow fashion a new environment to being a teen.

(I Think that's what waterfront may have been and au go go boasted about !)

  • great to see this on here, i still have this on 7" vinyl, does anyone know how many copies were pressed? i think i got my copy in parramatta!!! oh the memories!!.. i have a signed handbill with james on there and the rest of the hoodoo gurus [ the 1983 line up! both items must be worth a few quid!

  • Try again you just cut me off bastids!
