For a CD review by John Valenteyn from Mapleblues Magazine http://tinyurl.com/2guxaz

Joe says,
We're a roots band. I guess what people are calling "Americana" fits, 'cept we're Canadian. "Alt-country" also fits, as does "folk" and "acoustic blues". Alec likes to call what we do "the Birth of the Blues". Sounds about right to me, but unfortunately, some folks might think that they're in for a night of Charlie Patton and Blind Lemon Jefferson.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the stuff we like to write and play harkens back to a time when folks didn't make as much of a distinction between styles as they do today.
Most folks aren't aware that Maybelle Carter was a fairly competent bottleneck player, so if I told you we were influenced by the Carter Family, would you make the connection? Probably not.
So... Here's some folks that have influenced us in a very major way: Hank Williams, Charlie Poole, Junior Wells, Dwight Diller, George Jones, Dock Boggs, Doc Watson, Doc Holliday, the Stanley Brothers, the Louvin Brothers, the Marx Brothers, Little Walter, Big Walter, Merle Haggard, John Lee Hooker, Hound Dog Taylor, Jimmy Rodgers, Stompin' Tom Connors, Muddy Waters, Billy Connolly, Robert Johnson, Michael Pickett, Harry Manx, Taj Mahal, Keb Mo, Danny Marks, David Wilcox, Morgan Davis, Downchild Blues Band, Carlos Del Junco, Matt Minglewood, Rick Fines, Jenny Whiteley, The Phantoms and Lowell George. Do a google search, you won`t be disappointed. Also If you like this video you should do a search for these major influences.Buddy Guy, James Cotton, John Lee Hooker, Rev Gary Davis, Jimmy Reed, Lightning Hopkins, Pinetop Perkins, Blind Willie Johnson, Barbecue Bob, Johnny Adams, Bobby Bland, Charles Brown, Albert Collins, Pee Wee Crayton, Willie Dixon, Jesse Fuller, Lowell Fulson, Slim Harpo, Wynonie Harris, Earl Hooker, Walter Shakey Horton, Alberta Hunter, Etta James, Lonnie Johnson, Albert King, BB King , Jimmy McCracklin, Little Milton, Jimmy T99 Nelson, Junior Parker, Bessie Smith, Otis Spann, Johnnie Taylor, Big Joe Turner, Sonny Terry, Dinah Washington, Junior Wells, Josh White Jr, Big Joe Williams, John Lee Williamson, Sonny Boy Williamson II, Jimmy Witherspoon, Howlin' Wolf, Ray Charles, T-Bone Walker,Tampa Red, Blind Willie McTell, Sleepy John Estes, Skip James, Reverend Gary Davis, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Mississippi John Hurt, Karen Neumann, Robert Pete Williams, Freddie King, Bukka White, Hound Tog Taylor, Kokomo Arnold, Mississippi John Hurt, Elizabeth Cotton, Furry Lewis, Big Bill Broonzy, Blind Boy Fuller, Scrapper Blackwell.

  • sounds more like bluegrass music

  • Thanks!

  • hi fellows, i really like good ole blues...good job..

     the progression is G-C-G-D-C-G

    good stuff

  • This blues is actually an 18 bar blues in the key of G with the progression starting on the C. Glad you like it.

  • The irritating thing about these YouTube videos is that the music is interrupted every five or ten seconds, for two or three seconds at a time. How the hell do you overcome that, so I can have the full splendour of the JoeToole, BrokenJoe voice?

    Boyce Richardson

  • Hi Boyce, it could be your connection speed according to this from the help centre ( If a video doesn't play continuously, it may be due to your connection speed. You'll need a broadband connection with at least 500+Kbps for the best viewing experience. It's also possible that our servers are experiencing high traffic, which sometimes affects the speed. If this is the case, there's not much you can do, but we are continuously adding servers to keep up with demand )
