The cloud of steam on the South African horizon belonged to the narrow gauge Garratt locomotives. Serving the industrial railways of South Africa in the 1990s, these articulated locomotives were hard workers. This 1995 trip on a special steam excursion records the Garratts on several railways, including a two and one-half foot gauge line. Not long after our trip, the Garratts were replaced by diesels.

This is a fantastic video! I only have one correction, the gauge of the narrow gauge Garratts in this video is two feet (rather than two and half). Best, Zubi
