It's a song about Jesse's contemplation of the afterlife, and if he's good enough to have a rewarding one. Doesn't mean believes in GOD or not, he's asking a divine healer in general, that many call GOD. Sure, there's ad lib scripture in it, but it merely fit into the tone of the song. I know atheists and people of other religions who adore this song, because they can fit it into their own context. If you listen to Sowing Season by them, it explains why Jesse is thinking like this in this song.
