The Convair F2Y Sea Dart was a unique American seaplane fighter aircraft that rode on twin hydro-skis for takeoff. It only flew as a prototype, and never entered production, but it is still the only seaplane to exceed the speed of sound.

It looks like something from the Thunderbirds TV series of the mid-60s.

Aircraft carrier aircraft made the seaplane concept obsolete.

Hell... I don't know how he was able to even see out of it! When we were restoring the one now on display in San Diego, I got into the cockpit and they closed the canopy.

There's a pretty large metal bar running down the centerline, and the reat of the canopy was at a pretty shallow angle. I don't remember visibility being all that good.

Yep....I was part of the restoration crew of that particular plane. I was the youngest (still in HS). My father was an engineer at Convair and worked on the Sea Dart program.

It was rather nice to see him working again with the older guys who'd mentored him when he was a young engineer.

'Course, being young & small, I was the one who got sent into the engine bay to bail all the water out!
