Performed live and unedited by Pamela Ryan, Professor of Viola, Florida State University College of Music, 2009. Johannes Palaschko was born in Czechoslovakia in 1877 and died in 1932. His career was in Berlin where he was elevated to director of the Böttcher Conservatory in 1913. The edition for this performance is the 1907 Zimmerman published in Leipzig, and this particular copy was donated by Paul Doktor (one of Ryan's teachers) to the Primrose International Viola Archive at Brigham Young University. Etudes by Palaschko have been published in German, Russian, American, French, and Italian editions. There is a new edition by Mark Pfannschmidt of Op. 55 (mark.viola@yahoo.com). Here is a list of the Opus numbers of Palaschko etudes: Op. 36, 44, 49, 55, 62, 66, 77, 87, 96. There are four etudes entitled Capriccio including: Op. 44 (Artist), No. 10; Op. 96, No. 24; Op. 87 (easy), No. 5; Op. 66, No. 12. For more information, see the following article in the Jounal of the American Viola Society , Vol 8, No. 3, p. 5-21, "The Viola Etudes of Johannes Palaschko," by violist Joël Belgique. Belgique writes of Op, 44 Künstler [Artist]-Etuden, "This etude book could easily be compared to the Paganini Caprices."p. 4. Of the Capriccio, Op. 44, "This is the longest of the etudes in this opus and requires much practice. The extended section in C-sharp minor is very challenging.," p. 17. "In all, Opus 44 is well worth any violist's examination." p. 18.
the macrobiotic viola: good for you but not very flavorful. Why such a large viola? In one video you talk about limiting strain and playing in a healthy way then you're playing a viola that's almost the size of your torso. Isn't that straining? Also the "paw method" that you espouse in your other video, really seems to be not helping you make a very good sound. I realize these are mostly etudes and unedited, but sorry the sound, interpretation, dry dry as toast. With no soy butter.
