Just another little bit of stupid rubbish to amuse my daughters and teach myself some more about Synfig Studio. This is my second attempt at uploading these titles as the first attempt was an embarassing disaster in the Kdenlive chroma-keying department (my fault entirely!).

The amazing Roddy Buxton sent me a rather nice copy of the ATV Today 1976 titles that he telecined with his home-brew telecine machine (you can read more about this on Roddy's excellent blog). These titles are often shown on the news in the Central region cropped and zoomed so I thought it would be interesting to see what a genuine 16:9 version would look like.

The ATV Zoom was created in 2008 in Macromedia Flash 8 and filmised entirely in Kdenlive. The titles themselves were drawn in Inkscape and then animated in Synfig Studio - Synfig is a dream for this kind of animation. The titles were filmised entirely in Kdenlive too.

The Synfig Studio animation was produced as 8 separate sifz files that were compiled in a master sifz file that was rendered out as a HuffyUV avi file at HD 1920 x 1080. I then did the keying in HD before bumping the video down to standard Widescreen PAL definition for filmising.

This is not at all dissimilar to the way the originals were produced - they were made on 35mm but broadcast from a 16mm copy.

  • Hi Jeff, Wonderful as this is, I think you may have overlooked something. I remember the white bars rolling down the screen as pictures, not white bars - think they were there for overlay purposes...the last bars faded into the live studio.

But I just love what you do - truly awesome, so creative. Long may you continue!! Tim

  • @bbctim123 Lovely to hear from you - I love your channel! I knew about the white bars (Roddy Buxton had told me what they were for), but there were two reasons I didn't do anything with them. First my aim was simply to recreate Roddy's film transfer in widescreen. Secondly, I have never seen a recording of things keyed onto the white bars so I would really want to see an example before I did that. If you have a recording of stuff being keyed where the white bars do I'd love to see it.

  • top draw mate.

  • @bbctim123 Good to hear from you too Dave!

Sadly, I have no such recording, just ever weakening memories...from what I

gather the VT archive of ATV today is quite pitiful but at least we have

    the film insert...

Equally, I've drawn a blank on finding VT of the BBC Midlands revolving 'm'

on the drum, but I have found others who remember it, which is re-assuring!

I saw the thing in presentation at Pebble Mill as a teenager, stunned by

it's naffness, and how good it looked on screen!

  • Very good , l also liked the nationwide one you did , also featuring the children

  • Really nicely done! Synfig is such a great tool.

  • No Jim Callaghan? ;)
