A friend of mine, David Fleet (.com), asked me to design / concept a character for him to model, no real specifications so I spewed out some thumbnails and took it from there. Here's a quick development sketch in speedpaint form.
This stage of the process took around 1.5 hours. Next I'll be making some adjustments and adding colour before doing a final paint in oil on canvas (me hopes).

I saw a few wee techniques in there which I've promptly stolen. Awesome work.

also, a tip from me to you would be to work fast with big shapes and broad strokes. Go in light and fast then when you feel like the lines are in the right place go in a tighten it up. Keep a distance from the image so you get a good view of the total thing. Getting in too close is a bad idea.

Hi! thanks for giving me my first comment!
I'm not really using anything special. For simple sketching I try to keep away from crazy brush settings that might slow down your response speed. The sketch brush as an elliptical shape to it so it feels/looks more like a pen. This fill brushes have a little texture in there to give some grain, that also feels nicer to work with. I'm using a Wacom Cintiq, which is really nice to work with.
