Congressman Jerry Nadler introduces an amendment to the Defense Appropriations bill designed to significantly reduce casualties in Afghanistan. The amendment would provide funds to insulate shelters at forward operating bases, which can reduce the amount of energy required to heat and cool the structures by up to 92%. With over 200,000 gallons of fuel a day used just to heat and cool military installations in Afghanistan, properly insulating structures has the potential to dramatically reduce energy consumption. This saves lives and money, as fewer fuel convoys are needed to supply our military.
A similar insulation effort in Iraq has led to almost $1 billion a year in savings and taken more than 11,000 fuel trucks off the road. This, in turn, has prevented an estimated 458 American casualties, according to Army fuel convoy data.
