Directed by John Erman. With Bette Midler, John Goodman , Trini Alvarado , Stephen Collins , Marsha Mason , Ben Stiller and others ... Divine Ms. M - she's got guts . The role is tailor-made for her and she does a fine job, despite what the majority of critics say. She just doesn't somehow make us care about Stella, the way Stanwyck did. The plot : mother love and sacrifice for daughter's future. Fun to see comic Ben Stiller here as a very young heavy.

call me corny but this always reminds me of my mom i havent seen this movie in almost twenty years and now that i have daughters of my own i cant even imagine giving them all that was to me love happiness laughter advice it really is a full time job but they have my moms strength so i know they can make any life the best one ever

I remember watching this movie when I was little and still to this day that last scene always makes me cry. Even though I don't have a daughter this movie makes me realize my son will grow up one day and leave me to start his own life.
