@SuchAPrettyMess Vanessa got the last laugh. I remember this lady at this church I used to attend saying that Vanessa wasn't raised Black. Just because she wasn't raised in the projects and had two parents who taught her and her brother the values of education, culture and hard work didn't mean she was raised other than Black.

@borjie85 no the indentify her because theirs full black women her color and she can pass as a black women, you should see my family were all different colors and have different features but were all black and the only white feature i see on vanessa is her light eyes

I think the reason Vanessa and a lot of people in the black community identify her as a black woman, despite her white features, is because the white community has been known not to accept anyone who isn't a 110% white as belonging to their community, unlike the black community who is always willing to accept anyone, even if they are not 100% black.

awwww.. she's adorable!! love her

The beautiful part about this acceptance speech is that the tears are real, and the hard work behind those tears is real. Nowadays,90% of awards shows are phony and full of bull-****. It had been 5 years since the Miss America scandal, and Vanessa had worked VERY hard with her music career. To be acknowledged by her own people after everyone else gave up on her was a HUGE boost for her at that time.

Vanessa is beautiful, talented, elegant, classy and sophisticated. I remember this and she has proven herself over and over again.

Why are people spending so much time on her race? She identifies as a Black woman and the NAACP identifies her as being Black, so let's just leave it at that. If anything people should be commenting on how heartfelt her speech was and the fact that the Black community did rally around her when she faced death threats from racists.

@1802graceave: no both her Parents are bi-racial (mixed) they're not black. BLACK AFRICAN DECENT do not have blue eyes and blonde hair that's a European Mix. Always Remember that. RESEARCH HER PARENTS.
-
@driftingdrought yes she is a gift to everyone, but the black community embraced her during her time of controversy while the white community shunned her.. (as always)
-
@driftingdrought her parents are african american, not bi-racial. Of course they have some european ancestry but neither of their parents were fully white.
I have waited/wanted to see this speech again for YEARS! It just touched my heart! I love this woman and her strength is encouragement to everybody...to get back up again!

Oh my lord, this is positively heart wrenching in a good way!! Some people didn't consider Vanessa "black enough", but many DID as well, and she's always been proud of her race... I can certainly relate due to being black and very light skinned myself!! God I love, love, LOVE Vanessa Williams!! This vintage video is the Vanessa I fell in love with, during the Right Stuff years, most youngins' know her from Ugly Betty, which is fine too, tee hee... Vanessa is a GIFT to the black community!!!!
