Here is (to my knowledge) the only aircheck in existance of Ray Otis, when he jocked at the Cleveland Top 40 powerhouse WIXY-1260. This aircheck is ultra-rare for many reasons: first, it begins with two WIXY promos, giving the "new" DJ lineup for early 1966, when they added Ray Otis and Joey Reynolds to their arsenal of DJs. Secondly, you'll hear a sign-on from 6 AM on Monday morning; WIXY was not 24/7 in its earliest days, they signed off on Sunday nights. And third, this is valluable because Ray Otis only worked at WIXY for a few months, coming back to Cleveland (he worked at WHK but left in '61 for WKMH in Detroit) from KXOK in St. Louis. Also, this aircheck was made when WIXY was only 3 months old, still in its "chicken rock" days (playing Dean Martin and Bobby Vinton along with the Beatles). It was a few months later that they became more mainstream Top 40 and sped up their tempo. You'll hear the Spot Series 38 jingles in this aircheck, too, first time they were heard in Cleveland. A word about the quality: my reception was awful (WIXY was only 5000 watts), and my radio kept cutting out every now and then. Plus, the volume went up and down like a roller coaster; I tried to equalize it as much as I could, so bear with me!! Anyway, I hope you enjoy this for what it's worth: a true piece of Cleveland radio history!! This aircheck is scoped, meaning the songs are cut out, except for the beginning and end. Everything else is intact, exactly as broadcast, even the newscasts!!
How could anyone not like? It's WIXY!!! And back in the early days!
