  • Such a sad song ...

  • People interseted in throat singing should try the 1999 documentary Genghis Blues. Paul Pena, a blind blues singer from San Francisco, learned throat singing on his own. He impressed a visiting Tuvan group so much that he was invited to a throating singing competetion in Tuva. He was greeted with great enthusiasm and won an award. Not only do you hear a lot of singing from Paul and Tuvan natives, but you also see quite a bit of Tuva. Netflix has it.

    Sadly Paul died in 2005.

  • Where are the sixty horses in my herd?

Where is the aal (settlement) of my tribe?

Where is the hitching post where I can tie my horse?

Where is the seven kojuun (regions) of my homeland?

That's the English translation of the text taken from the CD of Throat Singers of Tuva with Kronos Quartet. It may sound alarming but Kronos is actually very discreet and lets the singers take center stage. According to the CD insert, this is a song of Tuvans living in Mongolia.

  • Wow. instead of pressing the strings onto frets, they lift their fingers under the strings. They're actually creating a bridge for each note. crazy.
