As I've often said, Anette really isn't that bad as far as the studio recording, although I might not personally like it that much, others might and obviously do.
What I find sad is the level at which they perform these days, where their live performances are painful to watch. The studio can work magic with Anette's voice in the studio, but live, well, there's no magic there to put it nicely.
@IDislikeCowards True, but I don't consider Anette even half as weak as you do. Any change in line up is a huge risk, but if the replacement is capable, the band may change but will still stay great. People will always have their preference for the old or for the new (or like both like me) but those are subjective.
Any of the bands I listed would NOT sound good without their vocalist, since a key part of the music IS the vocal element.
It's important to have great instrumentals, but equally important to have great vocals.
One without the other is not the same as the two together.
It's as if they replaced Emppu with some kid just learning how to play guitar. Would NW still be awesome, just because there's still a few good members left?
This discussion is pointless because I don't recognize ANY band by its vocalist. It's the band, guitarist, drummer, singer, bassist all together that are great. How much respect do you have for the rest of the band if you say they're no longer who they when their frontman is gone? I like groups of musicians. Not singers and their background band.
Would Queen still sound like Queen with someone other than Freddie Mercury? Would Nirvana still be Nirvana without Kurt Corbain? How about Led Zeppelin without Robert Plant, or Aerosmith without Steve Tyler?
I could go on and on, but when a band is recognized by its vocalist, it's not the same band without that vocalist.
Black Sabbath without Ozzie wasn't really Sabbath, but they WERE still good at least.
If they had replaced Ozzie with Michael Jackson would you still have liked them?
@IDislikeCowards I could give you a dozen examples but you just say it's not true then I'd say it is and so fort. So what's the point?
And I said earlier that they went in a completely different direction with Anette so I already admitted they sound different. Though they do sound like the same band, the music is still recognisable. Things aren't just facts because you say they are. Sabbath with Dio was still Sabbath even if different. Maiden with Bailey same thing, I could go on...
Every single old NW song that I know of focused on vocals. Find me one example where that's not true.
Without her the band doesn't sound like the same band, and this is a fact, whether you accept it or not.
As far as Marco, sure, he added balance with his vocals on certain songs, but not all of them. He and Tarja did harmonize really well though, and it's a shame they don't sing together anymore.

A band is only as good as their weakest member...
