Our little town is celebrating its 50th Anniversary as a City...the main event is the arrival of the rebuilt historic steam train the "Royal Hudson" ( this is not a typical "Beeke" video :-))
Sorry for the really bad video quality!...I suggest watching it in the smallest format...gives you the sharpest image.

  • Missed out on that...lived in the Rock for many years and watched it turn in to the dump it's become now, in the 80's it was far cooler to be from there before the beach and foreshore got steralised by council, and then kicked everyone off the nude beach down West beach.

Left and now make my home on the Gold Coast, Australia.

Real beaches, real surf and it's warm.....

  • Glad for you!

  • the whole "some parts are more historic than others" thing isn't exactly true, the rocky mountaineer coaches in the train are former Canadian National Super-Continental coaches built in the mid 1950's. the Super-Continental was Canadian Nationals last passenger train before VIA took over in 1978.

  • Your comment just proves my point, 484684984!

  • Been to White Rock(near Vancouver, isn't it?) years ago. Oh, I like steam train so much. Once I was on steam train in Oz. About 7 years ago, they had it every weekend from Melbourne to other town by Great Ocean Road. Thanks 4 posting, good job!

  • Glad you liked it :-)

  • I chased frisco 1522 for both of her last two runs in Sept 02. They had a diesel along, mostly to meet the electrical needs of the passenger cars she was pulling and of course as backup in case something happened. At least they had the common sense to put the diesel in the rear. That way it was there but did not get in the way of video and still pics.

  • I live in MIchigan and I have heard of "Puffing Billy".

  • its not a SD40 its a SD9M

    back up power

  • I love steam and have travel thousands of miles to chase,id a diesel is a part of it,wont make the trip, just takes away from what it should be

  • did they put a sd-40 w/ a royal steam locomotive?

  • When did railroads add the diesels to runs like this? Kind of takes away from the majesty of steam, but it serves as a backup locomotion....

  • The diesels were along for the ride, the Royal Hudson did all the work for the whole trip.

  • thanks for replying, as I may have mentioned, I haven't actually lived in WR since around 2003, and as you say, it is pretty disappointing. Then again, being surrounded by the fastest growing city in Canada (Surrey) hasn't done the place any favours. Having that bit of a ocean view has resulted in 3 and 4 level houses that obliterate the views (my house was a victim)and the masses of cruisers, sport utilities and very loud Harleys, pretty much destroyed any quaintness that managed to survive.

  • White Rock indeed was way cooler in the 1980's, it had a quiet seaside feel. Now WR city council has opened the doors to developers and will say yes to anything and basically established residents can go to hell. Mayor Judy Forster has turned WR into the laughing stock of BC communities in part due to her obsession with beautification. Other councillors aren't much better. Simple cafes like McLeans gave way to trendy expensive eateries that appeal to uppity snobs!

  • Well, NOW I know what a Diesel Pusher is :)
