A great song for its time. I met Barry at the Monmouth Fair, Monmouth, Maine back in the mid-seventies. He was a very friendly guy, and very much down to earth. He put on a great show that night. It's a great tribute to him that this song is still popular after all these years.

My understanding is he was killed in Guatemala City while riding in a taxi. I did a google search and read this.

Notice he was only wearing his paratrooper wings and Combat Infantryman's Badge (CIB) and none of the other decorations that he was authorized. Barry Sadler later shot himself with a pistol. Some say accidently, some say intentionally.

@glitergold In the olden days It's always Men when you refer to fighting men. Then in the 60's with women's lib, it should be Men and Women to recognize women participation. Now that Gays are officially recognize then we have to include them when we mention the Brave Men Women and Gays of our Armed Forces.
