Loss should be considered a wake-up call
COMOX -- The Comox Valley's main healthcare provider has lost it's accreditation status following a regular review of the facility last month. Accreditation Canada visits health care facilities across the country every three years and found enough concerns with St. Joseph's Hospital in Comox this time around to not renew the status.
President and CEO Wendy Nicklin said decisions to not renew accreditations are not taken likely and usually show a pattern or that a facility has a number of problems. She said that only around 2% of those facilities reviewed don't achieve accreditation.
Nicklin declined to specify what problems a team found when touring the facility in October citing confidentiality. She said tours are conducted for up to a week with surveyors talking to staff and examining procedures.
Nicklin said when organizations are assessed, there are a number of high priority, high urgency items reviewed and if a certain portion of those are un-met then a non-accreditation decision can occur. She said her group will be working with St. Joseph's over the next six months and the status could be reversed if the hospital shows enough improvement.
