http://mathmojo.com/kenken How to do a 9x9 Kenken Puzzle without Operation Signs. This is the first in a series of videos that will teach how to complete a fairly advanced 9x9 Kenken. This isn't for newbies. I promise to get some up for newbies after I finish this series though, OK?

  • This is Brian (Hoskeebo): I inadvertently deleted a comment, and I'd like to repost it here, even I feel it's pretty wrong and unfair:

"Please don't waste your time. I learned a few techniques but hoskeebo makes too many mistakes along the way (that happen to turn out correct). It's impossible to solve it the way he does and you won't figure this out until you get halfway into it. "

I'm sorry you feel that way about it. I'd like to know what other mistakes you mean, other than the one I had to correct you on in Step 12 of this series. I'd be happy to correct any of my mistakes. Unlike some, I don't claim that my way is the only way, or that I never make mistakes. Anyone who never makes a mistake in the solving of a puzzle is welcome to chuck all the stones they want. I'm just happy to have put up these FREE lessons for those whom they have helped.

  • By the way, I'm glad my mistakes happened to turn out to be correct. (Not sure what to make of that, though.)

  • looks pretty easy to do, where do I get them?

I do kenken puzzles all the time, haven't seen this type before... seems quite interesting

  • That's a great question. I got some sent to me from the owners of the Kenken trademark. They said I could share them. I'll put some up at the mathmojo (dot com) /kenken page pretty soon.

  • The non operation sign KenKen's seem to be easier to do on paper, since you can write the signage in. It really just becomes another variable.

  • I do the KenKen puzzles on NYTimes and the kenken site every day, and had never seen the puzzles with no operation signs. I'm drooling now.... thanks for helping me waste even more of my day!

  • This is awesome! I had no clue that KenKen could get so complicated, and I certainly wouldn't have known where to turn to get actual help. Thanks, Bucky!

  • Wow. I' ve never seen a KenKen puzzle like this before. And I don't mean the 9x9 concept I mean the fact that all we got is numbers and no idea whether to add, substract, etc them.

  • Thomas,

That would normally be a good Idea, except that we don't know that those cages can't be 5x5x1 multiplication problems. We have to keep that possibility in mind. But your thinking for addition is good, although qazzoid's point would make it better.

One thing I forget to stress is that we don't have to be in a rush have all the answers right away. It's more important that we are accurate in eliminating impossibilities, without rushing into assumptions of "having the right answer."

  • I sometimes wonder about the mistakes (i.e. unproved assumptions) I make in solving kenkens which just happen to be correct. This happens quite often (to me) in solving retroanalysis chess problems: I completely overlook some possibility - but it so happens that the possibility that i have overlooked is provably impossible.

  • no, you could also have 8+9+8 or 9+7+9
