8x8x8 LED Cube prototype

We came over som really cheap LED:s and decided to build ourselves a LED cube!

512 LED:s make up the cube, the only thing holding them together are their "legs", the anodes are connected in 8 horizontal planes and the cathodes in 64 vertical rows.

The 64 rows are driven by eight 8-bit serial LED drivers and the planes are controlled by eight PNP transistors.

The main control unit is an ATmega16 which supply the shift registers with data and control the transistors.
By lighting one plane at a time, all LED:s are individually controllable in software.
By doing this at about 200 Hz it is guarenteed flicker-free!

This is just a prototype, when I get cash (and time!) over I'm probably gonna do a red or blue one with high intensity LED:s...

whats the mcd and viewing angle of your leds? I built 5x5x5 (see my channel) with 45mcd but found them a bit too dim in daylight.

I don't know really, I just bought the cheapest possible LEDs I could find. I think mine are a bit dim in daylight as well...
